Social anxiety, shyness, lack of confidence

Social anxiety or social phobia is very common. It can affect your career and your ability to enjoy a happy social life or family life.

Most people suffer from this to some extent but it can become a real problem and cause a lot of distress when it begins to interfere with your life and stop you from doing the things you would like to do.

Social anxiety includes any of the following feelings:

  • Fear of being judged

  • Fear of failure

  • Anxious about what others think

  • ‘Performance anxiety’

  • Dislike of public speaking, presentation nerves

  • Shy bladder(find it difficult to use public toilets)

  • Generally nervous in social situations

  • Stammer or stutter.

  • Dislike of using a telephone particularly if being overheard

  • Worrying about how you look, being very critical of your own appearance.

  • A dislike of being put ‘on the spot’ for example speaking up in meetings

  • A dislike of authority

You may have had a traumatic or difficult experience in the past which created strong feelings, difficult emotions and anxiety. This could be causing your shyness and lack of confidence. A course of gentle effective therapy will allow you to put the experience into context, allowing you to understand the event with an adult perspective. Children absorb blame and accept reponsibility for bad experiences, once you begin to let this go and feel differently about yourself the symptoms of social anxiety you are experiencing will begin to disappear.

Lifespan Integration is a gentle and effective therapy which can change your reactions to people and events, creating new ways of thinking and feeling.
