Panic attacks

If you have a panic attack you could experience any or all of these reactions:

  • Your heart beats alarmingly quickly- like having palpitations

  • Your breathing rate increases rapidly, as though you can't get enough air

  • You could have a cramped feeling across the lower part of the diaphragm and a tingling sensation accompanied by either a hot or cold flush in unexpected parts of the body for example your fingers.

  • You may feel as if you are about to faint

  • You may feel as if you are rooted to the spot and unable to react normally to what is going on around you.

  • You may find it hard to speak or to react to what is being said to you.

You could have a vague feeling that something is happening which you can’t understand – which leads to a feeling of panic.

A course of gentle effective therapy will gently allow you to put experiences from the past into context, allowing you to understand events with an adult perspective. Children absorb blame and accept responsibility for bad experiences which can be unconsciously carried into adulthood. Once you begin to let this go and feel differently about yourself, the symptoms of anxiety and the panic attacks you are experiencing will begin to disappear.
